The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is coming to Shetland. The concerts include the world premiere of Chris Stout’s composition Tingaholm in Lerwick on Sunday 4th of March.

Tingaholm, Shetland (© Frank Bradford)Zoom In 2011 the RSNO commissioned Shetland-born composer and award-winning traditional fiddler Chris Stout to compose a substantial work for the orchestra to serve as the centre piece of their Sunday concert. The recital forms part of a week-long residential visit to Shetland from 1st to 5th March 2012. 70 RSNO musicians will travel north from the Orchestra’s base in Glasgow to take part in rehearsals and performances, education and community activities, workshops and master classes across the isles.

Chris took his inspiration from the sense of sharing knowledge which is central to this musical venture. On learning about the THING Project and the significance of thing sites as places to meet and exchange news and ideas as well as making laws, he named his piece Tingaholm after the Shetland’s lawthing site on the small promontory at the north end of Tingwall Loch.
